How did you find your job at Discovery Communications?

While I was interning at Carlyn Davis Casting, a fellow intern had a part-time job in Discovery's legal department. She encouraged me to apply to a couple of openings, and within a few weeks I had an interview. I ended up working in legal for two years. While my interests fall more on the creative side of the industry (writing and development, specifically), I found that legal was a great place to learn the business.

Everything a company does filters through legal at some point. I helped to draft the contracts for some of our networks' biggest shows. I knew about every claim that was filed against the company, and about every complaint letter recieved. I attended intense meetings about rights management when "new media" was just starting out. What I learned in those meetings has proven invaluable in my current position with the digital media team. Now I'm on the other side of the rights requests, but at least I understand what they mean!
